The charity was placed under statutory inquiry in August 2024 to investigate a range of concerns about the charity’s governance.

The Commission has now appointed two Interim Managers to the charity, whose role is to undertake certain duties to the exclusion of individuals who have been acting as trustees the charity.

Sarah Tomlinson and Phil Watts of Anthony Collins Solicitors LLP are tasked with:

  1. appointing new members to the charity, in line with the charity’s governing document

  2. identifying the skills required on the charity’s board of trustees and identifying from among the refreshed membership those who may be willing to stand for election at an Annual General Meeting (AGM)

  3. calling an AGM before the end of January 2025, to be held either at the Eldonian Village Hall or within a 2-mile radius.

The Interim Managers were appointed on 24 October 2024. The Commission’s inquiry into the charity remains ongoing.

Notes to Editors

  1. The Charity Commission is the independent, non-ministerial government department that registers and regulates charities in England and Wales. Its ambition is to be an expert regulator that is fair, balanced, and independent so that charity can thrive. This ambition will help to create and sustain an environment where charities further build public trust and ultimately fulfil their essential role in enhancing lives and strengthening society.

  2. The Charity Commission’s inquiry is examining Eldonian Community Trust Limited only. There are several other Eldonian entities which are not charitable and are therefore not within the Commission’s remit to investigate. The inquiry opened on 21 August 2024 under section 46 of the Charities Act 2011. More information on the scope of the inquiry can be found in the announcement.
