On December 9, the Department of State launched the Digital Agenda for Transformation in the Americas (DATA) for Cities Initiative. Building on the DATA initiative launched at the Ninth Summit of the Americas, this new $4.75 million initiative aims to empower municipal governments in Latin America and the Caribbean by providing grants to develop and strengthen smart cities capabilities and enhance public service delivery. Of this funding, the DATA for Cities Initiative will allocate $2.85 million to the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to support Smart City infrastructure projects, $1.25 million for the creation of a Smart City Innovation Accelerator that awards small grants to local innovators, and $500,000 for regional technology capacity building in Latin America and the Caribbean to create more connected, efficient, inclusive, and resilient urban environments.
