One Child is Missing Every Eight Minutes in India


Out of 192 entries from 19 police of different states across India, the Smart Policing Award 2021 was given to Delhi Police Head Constable Sukanya for her explanatory work in recovering missing minor children across India.


Sukanya is working in the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit /Crime Branch. The Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) facilitates the award ceremony.


As per the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 59,262 children went missing in India in 2020. With 48,972 children remaining untraced from the previous years, the total number of missing children has gone up to 1,08,234.


Missing a child every eight minutes is the biggest challenge for society especially law enforcement agencies in India nowadays. Millions of them were used as bounded labor, domestic slaves, and sex workers. Organizations like Bachpan Bachao Andolan are continuously working with local law enforcement agencies.
