At around 06:03 hrs on 19 December 2023, a train travelling between Doncaster and London Kings Cross struck parts of a temporary road-rail vehicle access point which had been left on the track near to Highdyke Junction, on the East Coast Main Line. The temporary access point had been used the previous night as part of an inspection of overhead railway power lines.

No one was injured as a result of the collision and the train did not derail. The collision caused damage to equipment on the underside of the train, which meant that it was unable to continue in service.

We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this accident. Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided to publish a safety digest.

The safety digest will be made available on our website in the next few weeks.
